Our Scope

Our Scope

Throughout the life cycle of civil (commercial) and military explosives

Explosives life cycle

SAFEX is concerned about the harmful impacts of explosives throughout their life cycle. The life cycle encompasses the design, development, manufacture, storage, distribution, use and disposal or recycling of explosives products

What are “explosives”?

They include explosive initiating devices, propellants, commercial and military powders as well as raw and intermediate materials dedicated to the manufacture of explosives such as technical grade ammonium nitrate (TGAN). It does not include fireworks.

Civil explosives

Civil, or commercial explosives, comprise blasting explosives and initiating systems used for mining and civil engineering

Military explosives

Military explosives are used in weapon systems employed primarily by defence forces for peace keeping purposes.

Exclusive materials

Technical grade ammonium nitrate (TGAN) is a typical raw material used exclusively in the manufacture of civil explosives

Emulsion Explosives Safety - Download

This information package looks at the hazards relevant to AN based emulsions and how hazardous situations can arise and what can be done for prevention and control, specifically with respect to sources of heat and pumping practices.
